Our 100% Grass Finished Beef comes from just down County Road M in River Falls. Grassroots Meat owners, Mark and Jean Moelter are committed to raising healthy and hardy animals using humane methods, in order to provide quality 100% grass-fed meat to our customers. Galloways, an ancient Scottish Breed, are ideal for pasture raising in our cold Wisconsin winters. They sport a unique double coat of hair, a short inner coat and a curly outer coat that provides good insulation year round. Galloways are extremely fertile, calve easily, and are excellent mothers. They are not bred to be "oversized". Because of this they produce steaks and roasts that are better size for today's healthy diet. Grass fed beef is four to six times lower in fat than grain-fed beef and contains only half the saturated fat, making it as lean as poultry and wild game. Hungry Hereford beef does not add any supplement to our feed; no growth hormones, no vaccination program at birth, no artificial calf starter growth program. We do not spray herbicides or pesticides on our crops. We do protect our cattle from flies and lice with external treatments. We will administer an antibiotic if required. (That animal will be sold to the conventional market at Zumbrota or Cannon Falls.) We have a “closed” herd except when we purchase a new bull every two years.
At this time, we are not certified Organic, however we are exploring the certification process, and continue to operate in such a way as to keep that a viable option. We currently use organic lime, organic seed, and organic fertilizer. (In addition to dozens of loads of VERY organic manure!) All prices are price per pound.
